Does a login time out after so long, even if you are actively reading posts?

    Thanks for your help.
When you log in, click the Remember Me button and you will not be timed out and won't have to log in again until you close your browser window and come back.

Some wanted more anonymity. Someone at the B&G suggested putting up a poll on this. It isn't an important issue with me, but some liked it and some didn't.

Another problem with it is that you don't show up as online unless you are logged on. You can read the site without logging on. Additionally, if you push the remember me button when logging on and leave a forum window open but minimized it still showed you as viewing even though you might be away from your computer or even forgotten that you had a forum window open.

    Default Who is online?

I see that there is discussion about this change. I also see that there is a poll about it. We will consider the results of the poll at some point. Why is it important for you to see who is logged on to the forum? Messages are posted and show the user names. I think that this forum can exists nicely without having a list of on-line members. When everyone can see who is on-line it may invite a sort of 'chat room' kind of atmosphere that we want to avoid. I don't see a real need for a list of members who are on-line. If you can give me some excellent reasons to replace this function then we are open to reconsidering this move. Maybe we can add part of it only. For instance, the number of on-line members at any time but without their user names. I am not sure what the software can support but will check it out.

You will have to make sure that no repeat voting is happening on your poll to make it valid. Members should be willing to show their name in a poll.

why did you change the ablity to see who is logged on ?

and, i do have to say, it was rather unexpected and perhaps rude for you to do this without warning, nor explanation.

You never saw a complete list
of members who were logged on
anyway. There is a stealth mode
    option that, I'm sure, many
    members choose to use.
