Is this a fake American Eagle?

Hey, Guys! Man, I've got to tell you all about this great deal I found on eBay. Some dude was selling silver American Eagles for less than spot. I bought 42 of them! (Sure, I did. That's just crazy)

I actually surprised this account is still active. I reported this two days ago. You would think that Ebay would have a couple of people just working on fakes, but I guess they are more concerned with DEI policies.

I'm not sure this is a fake. It could be a combination of poor photography and poor description. The seller seems to be challenged as far as listing things correctly. A look at the seller's few past auctions and history reveals he's been a member for 6 years. Past auctions include a partial set of nickels for $12, a partial set of dimes(described as sterling) for $40. A Sacajewea dollar for $5. A $5 bill for $7. A 1984 Mint Set for $2 over face. Present auctions include another 2023-s(not) silver eagle(just 1) and other piddly items, like his meal ticket, the Sacajewea dollar he makes $4 on(he's sold 1 in the last few years). There is a 1910-S lincoln penny NGC graded VF(by the way the silver eagles in question could also be NGC graded). Can't tell if the penny is nice because the picture looks like a brown blob, though the NGC holder is clear Still, the penny is worth more than the $20 it's listed for.

I know I wouldn't, and you wouldn't, and everyone reading this(the humans anyway) wouldn't, but we're not everyone.
Do a search on completed auctions on Ebay for simply "silver eagle". the listings that are completed and sold. I see one or 2 that sold for 99 cents, with free shipping, from reputable sellers. A mistake maybe, or maybe a marketing effort.

Apart from Internet world, I've known anecdotally from bank tellers/bank managers of the people who deposited $500 bills, $1000 bills, even $10,000 bills. And a few tales of depositing rolls of silver coins or gold coins, the #1 story would be the older lady who went to deposit a couple of rolls of $20 gold coins and a few rolls of Carson City dollars, all original and BU.

As far as your auction in the OP, I do think it's most probable a fake, being sold knowingly or unknowingly, with a lean to unknowingly. I'm just not as sure as you and others who've posted are.
Ebay/Amazon/Craigslist/Etsy/Sotheby's/Christie's/Facebook, etc./etc. are all company's who try to make a profit.....some are better than others at policing what's being bought/sold but in my experience I've seen fakes from all of them.

the deal is however that if you can afford to get a good deal by being the auction or buy here now winner on these ebay listings and floating the payments for a short while, once it is delivered you can test it for authenticity and if it turns out to be fake, you can get your money back eventually especially if you use a credit card payment type. i have done that a couple times and either ebay policies or my credit card company or both have returned my payment and one time i was told i did not even have to send the fake coins back to the seller. its not something i would regularly suggest but can be done. you never know - you may be a winner.

The one I linked was a buy it now. I can see if it was an auction starting at 99 cents OR IF it was an older SAE that a wife was selling. But, a 2023 SAE? The seller had to get if from somewhere. I am 99.999% sure it is a fake.

The bigger issue I have is now there are 50 of these in circulation and each fake impact the credibility of the PM market in general. There should be harsh penalties for created and distributing fakes. Much harsher than walking around the Capitol building.

Agreed 100%. Counterfeiting law is harsh but not enforced, just like much else in this country. as long as it doesnt affect the elite democrats who cares>>>
