Thread: Opinions on these CC Morgan dollars...

    Default Opinions on these CC Morgan dollars...

    I dont mess with numismatic coins, but I am not comfortable with buying spot price right now.

    Are these reasonably priced? Likely to go up or down?

    There has been strong demand for Carson City Morgans for a very long time. These are GSA releases and are what you want and are regarded as the more desirable as an investment. Unlikely to get any cheaper because they will never be bullion related like a cull Dollar would be. I have handled every year including the 1879CC and the illusive 1889CC. The most common of the 13 Carson City dates are the 1882, 1883 and 1884.
    I bought a dozen mixed CC GSA Dolars back in the early 1970's for about $30 each, in that group I got 2 each of the common dates and a couple 1878's and one each 1880, 1881,1885 and a 1891... They were all nice coins but you have to expect bag marks on every one of them. They are exceptionally scarce without bag marks...

    300, Thanks for the response. If memory serves correct I think these were going for $600 around a year ago. I dont recall seeing them anywhere near this price if not mistaken.

    I think the wholesale pricing has been quite steady on 1882, 1883 and 1884 CC Dollars in GSA boxes, If they were retailing at $600 someone was making 50% on them. If they can be had for under $400 I would say that is a fair price for the piece of history they represent. All Carson City minted coins have a following and some collectors I know, only collect CC coinage for the connection to the "Old West"...

    I have liked coin collecting all my life, but I wouldn't consider a collectable coin at this time because;

    The price of the coin is hard to concretely determine. If I could buy close to melt and get a collecteble coin, I would. But the "collecteble" value is ambiguous

    "Collecteble" is a bit of and etherial concept. Kids today don't collect anything... Baseball cards, stamps, coins, marbles, Beanie Babies, Elvis Plates... If it isn't digital, they don't care. Things we grew up with that had collectebility as an incentive to collect, just isn't there anymore. I had two lessons that brought this fact home to me...

    One was I bought a large collection of Princess Diane items... Stamps and other collecteble items. It was years ago and I could not give an itemized list, but suffice to say, it was an interesting collection of stuff. It was a garage sale purchase and cost very little and I figured I would wait until the 10th anniversary and sell for a reasonable profit. No dice. The prices were sky high, but no one was buying. No one cared.

    Ditto a first day cover stamp collection with 22k gold foil stamp replicas in a cello window.... Right up my alley. I'm a stamp collector since a kid. Really really cool in my opinion. I paid, I think, three dollars for the whole book of over 100 covers. I thought I had a score. It tooks me a couple years of advertising and I think I got $25 for it. I even considered seeing if I could melt and recover the gold foil.

    So, at this point, "collectable" just doesn't have the $$$ power it did when I was paying retail for unhinged mint panels of Apollo-Soyuz Skylab commemorative stamps... But if the coin collection is YOUR thing, by all means. Good luck<---- and I mean that sincerly.

    I still operate a coin and currency business working only at coin/gun/western collectable shows for security purposes. While most of my customers are senior citizens, younger ones are maybe about 20- 30% of the coin and currency I sell. I do agree some things manufactured to be collected, end up worthless. That is part of the "game"...

    everything is " fashion". There are periods, everybody wants " new" stuff and spits opon "old" stuff. Then the trends reverse and old is again in and people regret to have dumped the old stuff. Mindsets change in waves. One should be wise, live partly with the actual mindset, partly hold the best of what the " old" made.

    I would not buy the coin/box pictured for that price. The condition looks to be heavily bag marked and may be a no grade. Paperwork/coa was also originally issued.

    Trying my best to figure out where to put extra income. Everything seems like a house of cards at the moment.

    Any suggestions as far as numismatics? What would be a better choice?

    My usual recommendation is Pre-1933 US gold in MS63 or better grade. My number 1 coin would be Indian Eagles 1907-1933. Second would be Liberty Eagles. Third would be $20 Libs and Saints. NGC or PCGS slabs only!
