Thread: Propane price

    Default Propane price

Around and around we go and right back to 2018 prices. July is when a lot of companies contract from the wholesalers for the fall farmer propane fills. it always the lowest price of the season and my company offers a Summer Fill discount.

Its the same in Florida. My generator 500 gal LP tank is at 68% and they won't deliver unless I'm <60%.
They only go to 80%. So it's a 100 gallon purchase or so. I only fill in July - so let's see how much I use this Hurricane season.
Hurricane Irma, I burned 8% in 5 days.
1.6 billion people have no access to electricity, whatsoever.
2.4 billion people still burn wood and manure as their main source of energy.
3.0 billion more people will be born in the next 30 years.

Climate change isn't the killer - energy poverty is the killer.
More, all the above, and everywhere answers all energy issues.

I use 400 gallons/1 tank a year so I fill during their July special. I should note they have not released this years Summer Fill price, no doubt they knew this was coming. Hard winter years I'm pretty lean this time of the year, <10% or so. it was a mild winter so I have a surplus at 25%.

How many KW is your generator & what do you think your average load is? I'm interested in calculating how much capacity I should install if I get a rig like that.

    22 kW.

My load is well below that. Likely 8 kW.
2.5 ton AC / Heat Pump
    Electric Hot Water Heater
    Dishwasher
Lights / TVs / Computers like everybody else.
    Pool Pump (load shed)
    Stove (load shed)
    Clothes Dryer (load shed)

So potentially three loads get sequentially shed if load limit is reached

And that load shed feature has not activated since 2012 when installed and tested.

In NC I had a 12 kW Kohler on Natural Gas (derates to 10.5 kW) - but that house had gas heat, stove, and hot water.
It also had a nasty habit of under-frequency trips on random generator starts.
After much diagnostics, determined that when the AC compressor restarts with a high pressure condition, that starting current was excessive.
Installed a 3 minute TD relay on AC compressor contactor that allowed pressure to bleed off before restart.
That fixed it. After a solid year of WTF random trips and calls to Kohler.

I upsized a notch and changed brands - drama free.

My PA house is tiny, gas everything and I put in a 14 kW Generac there.

Wife claims I have rich man's syndrome, but actually I've made so much power in my life, I sort of like having it 24/7.
First thing I do in a property.

Go a size up is my advice. Your neighbors will likely have a dolly with a fridge and a freezer they need plugged in.
My back patio becomes a gas grill restaurant in Hurricane outages.
People appreciate a hot cup of coffee, a shower, AC indoors, etc.

I think I have six or seven 20# tanks full I have bought at yard sales for $3-$5.
