One of the big problems with them is that the long molecule absorption of radiation eventually breaks down the molecules, so the more exposure, the more they wear out. That is an insurmountable hurdle for long term stable matrix (part of the generated electricity comes from the actual process of denuclearation of the molecules... once broken apart, no more generating ability.
