Metal Detecting .. coin shooting

This is a place for metal detecting stories, types of detectors folks use etc.

I've spent many hours searching with my old detector a Teknetic's, a dinosaur now days. Didn't find much. Was hired a few times to search for items, and was a good way to meet people. Found some Canadian silver (dimes and quarters) from the 1950's-60's but lots of penny's and clad and junk. Love gleaning beaches and always found something most days.

Lent my machine out 3 years ago and just got it back, as in non-functional. Worked fine when I lent it out. I don't blame the fellow I lent it to, more likely due to age and perhaps lack of use. He did find a couple of silver dollars the first 15 minutes he used it. A 1952 Canadian silver dollar and a Morgan dollar along the sidewalk to their old place.

I almost purchased one but realized I don't have a clue and would like to hear some input on brands models and so fourth to give me better guidance as to what I should purchase. I realize typically you get what you pay for but sometimes you can pay to much for something not worth the package it's in. I look forward to hearing and info you vets have regarding detecting. I thank you in advance.

There use to be a long metal detecting thread years ago, I am not sure, I think it was in the silver message room but it had a lot of great info on machines and some great stories, maybe someone can dig it up and attach it here.

Yes I remember the thread well. I searched for it and couldn't find it. I would have boinked it if I had of found it. Lots of great info in this thread. Perhaps the Mods could join this thread to that existing one?

Anyways, I'm in the market for a new detector. Leaning towards a Garrett Ace 250, but haven't researched what is new out in the market. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

White's Electronics is a good company with good service.

I have two of their detectors, a VLF and a PI. The VLF is the GMT model and the PI is their TDI model. Both VERY sensitive and professional level detectors.

In general, set the detector to maximum power while still maintaining "balance" and dig ALL targets.

Also, count on digging up at least 100 pieces of trash for every remotely interesting object.

Mostly ... have fun digbird! It's a great way to get outside and the hunt is fun.

What state are you guys in? I've looked at it as a fun side hobby - I'm in Southern California/ near Los Angeles. I feel like this is to NEW of a state with many homes in my County build more in the 1977-2000 range.

It seems like the parks and beaches and ponds around would have all been searched. Is that a correct thinking or are little hidden coins and 'gems' hidden al around.

Silver coins would be great but figured newer dropped jewelry and fishing tackle would be about as good as it gets.

I live in British Columbia. Lots of historic sites close by as well as lakes with nice beaches. Involves some travel. You may have to travel a bit Wizard but check out any local sites first, jewelry is always a nice find. The fellow I bought my detector from had 2 small treasure boxes custom made for him and one was full and the second one was half full, all was jewelry from his beach detecting.

I have been detecting for many years and I am fortunate to have a few really good sites. Found some Anthony Wayne Buttons and a 1776 2 real this fall.

I believe I posted this on another thread but anyway, this spring I went out for about two hours on old cabin site and randomly found $5.03 in change... all coins from the same year, 1854...how is this even possible? Can you guess what coins I found?
