I don't mind the password change but I was stating it requires you to enter your email address as if it were a new address too.

I'm pretty sure that's just a misleading vBulletin form. If you look at the user settings for changing password and email the clue is in "Edit Email Address (Optional)"
(that should have your existing email present, which you leave unchanged), so when you change your password just fill in that part and ignore the email part.
No if you leave the email blank you get an error. It forces you to re-enter your old email again even if not changed.
