I guess it may not sell, it was kind of an experiment. The shipping is 3.50, true ebay will tack on tax. I just won't do craigslist, don't want to deal with scammers, as is ebay has scammers too. I think LCS from here on out, listing fees are kind of a rip, and you almost feel bad for buyers because you know they can get better deals elsewhere.
Edit: Ok, we have a bid this morning and views went way up on the overnight as well.

oh, heck, so it is an auction sale. i hope you set the minimum starting bid high enough that if no one else bids and you are contracted to sell it once the auction ends that you are not hurt much if at all. my selling on ebay are all non-auction type - buy now pricing.

    Hi Everything,

I've sold on eBay quite a bit and sometimes I think it all depends on what exactly it is that you're selling. See, I also watch certain listings of the same exact item, say any particular year of ASE and when it's a hot item (such as right now), what I've noticed is that some sellers will list the coin as an auction and some will list it as a Buy-It-Now and actually do better. The way I see it, some buyers don't want to wait the 3 or 5 or 7 or 10 days for a listing to end and are actually willing to make their purchase immediately even if it costs them a little more. If you as the seller, "fold in" your costs (listing and final value fees, shipping and/or insurance and tracking), but offer "free" shipping, they'll still bite. On the other hand, I've seen some sellers who list an ASE as an auction (whether they start it at 99 cents or not and get immediate bids), actually make less on the transaction because they started it as an auction and ended up with a lower sell price. Obviously this doesn't include the scarcer years like 1996 because they'll almost always achieve a higher final price than a common year like 2015 or similar. In the case of eBay, even with so many buyers trying to nab the lowest price possible (like us), you still have the benefit of numbers working for you and oftentimes someone will not want to wait and just do the Buy It Now. I also try to keep in mind that a lot of buyers are savvy enough to know that the price of precious metals is a fluid thing and can go up or down precipitously, so sometimes it pays to offer an immediate sale which also eliminates the "snipers" at the end of the auction. Doing this risks the chance that your coin could go higher than what you were initially hoping for as it only takes 2 bidders to drive the price higher, but you also "turn it over" much quicker and get cash in hand immediately as long as make it a requirement of the sale.

Well holy silver eagles, they bid it up to 47 plus the 3.50 shipping, it does come in a nice original presentation box and what not. I had another 7 ounce bar lot that was at 223, they ran that up to 257 last minute as well, but those also came in a 20 ounce sure-safe box.

Welcome to Ebay bid bots hehe. Looks like, with a touch of emotional bidding.

Thanks for putting the time in for a reply on your take on ebay. I so agree, depends on what your selling, and if it's "in", etc. I find it difficult to put a buy it now price because it has to be 30% higher than the starting. I guess?, why should that matter. I just generally like to put a starting closer to the actual price vs. way under the actual price and risk losing money on the deal.

I'm not surprised the buyer for the ASE doesn't want to pay. Ebay is kind of a drag when it comes to non-payment they'll charge me for the listing anyway.

Maybe I should not have my auctions end Friday night, maybe Saturday or Sunday, the buyer for the ASE is not paying up.
You're welcome. Anything I can do to help- I will. In general, strictly in general mind you, "they" say to start and end eBay auctions on a Sunday night around 9pm (Eastern time) for the best success- obviously on the West Coast this equates to 6pm with Central and Mountain somewhere in between. It apparently is the premium time to be able to "catch" everyone's attention across the country or something- if they'd be interested in what you're selling anyway. And most/much of the time you will get the inevitable last second snipers such as you just experienced recently. It's a beautiful thing.

Yeah, and it really does depend on what it is you're selling. As for the BIN price, if it still has to be 30% higher than the starting price, then just drop your starting price. Yes, it's a small gamble, but you're selling something as "hot" and in demand as an ASE, would you really think that it wouldn't sell, and at a premium? Sometimes (but certainly not all the time or even most of the time) I've even taken the eBay suggestion and started very popular items at 99 cents and watched them get instant bids (literally in seconds) and end higher than I ever thought they would. But here's the kicker... You have to go in and do some research first. Check out the highest selling prices of what you're selling and see exactly how that seller started their listing- whether as a BIN or as an auction or both (an auction with a higher BIN). Many times you'll be able to see the pattern and make your decision easier. Just make sure that if you do a BIN, that you set it high enough to overcome your fees, but not so high that you don't get any bites. You do have the power of numbers working for you and that translates into sales.

And Covid notwithstanding, one reason why you may or may not want to end auctions on a Friday or Saturday night is that a lot of people "go out" on those days- to movies, restaurants and bars, etc., etc.. That may be less of a factor depending on which state people live in because of the pandemic, but it's a consideration. On Sunday evenings, it stands to reason that most people are back at home killing time and probably online waiting to go back to work the next day. They're generally just chillin' out after dinner- watching a movie, playing poker, maybe doing some online shopping. You get the gist. If the buyer for the ASE hasn't paid yet, depending on how long it is since the auction ended, contact them and diplomatically ask why. This is another reason why doing just BIN's is beneficial- you can check a box when making the listing that compels the buyer to pay immediately and it eliminates some of the BS.

The ASE finally paid. I've had buyers tell me they don't have the money, but they will next day, and sure enough. The fees are ridiculous, just for selling something for 257 ebay gets 31.50 (just had to complain). I see what you mean because ebay does pester buyers with emails like oh don't let it get away, and here is your watch list for today, etc. I did research on Sundays because girlfriends were always so grouchy on Sunday evenings. Being sensitive nice guy, I'd be with them on that day to cheer them up. It's generally peoples most unhappy day/evening of the week because people have to go back to work the next day. Maybe they'll cheer themselves up by tending.

I wasn't aware we could just do a BIN, I see now how to do that.

Heck, the reason I've got things up is because I was looking at the prices things were going for, 27 silver helps it seems. I'm going to go on a little selling spree here I think, get rid of a bunch of graded stuff, 40% halves, things that are taking up room, generics, etc. I've noticed that price upswings seem to help, people see prices going up and that's when they want to buy, when price falling, opposite. And, getting more into trading stocks and all, even I'm culprit to the behaviorism. WOW, NY 8.88% sales tax, what is the world coming to!

Glad to hear they paid. Yeah, I've had it happen to me before also. Sometimes I had to chase them (contact them via the eBay message system, so it's official and recorded) if it went beyond eBay's 3 day time period without payment. That's why I quickly learned to include in all of my listings that " As I will do my very best to carefully package and send your item(s) rapidly so that you can get what you bought as soon as possible, speedy payment is always highly appreciated." I also say that if there is any problem with payment whatsoever, that they MUST contact me via the messaging system as soon as it's possible. Perhaps a handful of times in a couple thousand transactions did I ever have to wait longer than a few days for payment and only twice did I ever get "beat". Another suggestion would be to make up a template so it becomes easier and quicker for you to do multiple or repeated listings. It will save you tons of time. Just make sure you update anything different from listing to listing and keep the general information that's applicable to all your listings (returns/no returns, shipping/handling/insurance, you strive for the buyer's satisfaction, etc., etc.).

Absolutely nothing wrong with taking a little profit off the table and refining your stack, IMO. On the other note, yup. We're all creatures of habit and unless we train ourselves to not follow the herd at least once in awhile, then we're predictable. Yup, NY State is crazy with it's taxes. One of the worst in the country!

and if you use paypal in the transaction, they charge fees as well, even a 10% fee on the tax the buyer pays. its brutal. i figure with ebay and paypal fees and shipping i need to figure in at least a 15% sale price over the actual current value of the item i am selling. i use scrap gold price on karat jewelry and ask price on bullion. and then add the extra 15% just to break even.
