Default Scrap Metal Tips and Small Talk

Hey, lets start a new thread on scraping metal, I know a few members are scrappers also. This can be about local prices, tips on breaking down, etc. what ever you want to talk about.

One of my favorite things to scrap is vacuum cleaners and gas grills. Each has different types of metal in them as I seperate each metal as much as I can.

My first tip, save your screws, bolts, and nuts into different buckets, some yards will pay more per pound as they as consider bushling. I get 2-3 cents more per pound vs. just throwing on the steel pile.

What are some under-the-radar junk electronics with a surprising amount of copper in them? Aside from copper, what other scrap metal gives you the best bang for your buck?
The beard has turned into the padded bra of masculinity. There's a whole generation running around looking like lumberjacks, and most of you can't change a tire.

It’s hit or miss with the electronics, fans are good.

Yellow brass is a goreat metal, found everywhere and @$1.70-$1.90 per pound, it adds up really fast. One thing alot of drive by scrappers miss are garden hoses. I don’t, I cut off the brass ends on every hose I find, and in the spring, I find alot.

It varies, I never been lucky enough to get one yet, but with all the info the yards ask, I don’t need the hassle.

IL State law is. If you have over $100.00 in any type of copper scrap combined. The first $100 is cash and the balance they cut as a check.

We get our driver’s license scanned every time, the yard knows me by my first name now Your name, address, truck type and vehicle license number is on your receipt. If you’re legal, nothing to worry about.

If your a business and your name is on file, no check and you get cash. But they don’t advertise it very much

What kills me is when I see guys throwing water heaters on the pile and there is still copper and brass on them, They are throwing away dollars to make pennies. It take 5 minutes to strip a water heater. Go figure

i always save copper and brass....have since i was a kid, why stop now lol. I like the brass valves off the propane tanks...my dad used to hit them off with a hammer...they add up decent...just need a hack saw to cut out the steel spring clip.
