    Take a look at the wheat above liberty. I can't wait to get home and check my Morgans.

    On the 1881 coin, the second '1' looks wrong, fat.

    that's enough clue for me, extra thickness proved more non-silver metal is needed to pat up the weight. They didnt want to go too thick so they target slick/cull weight.

    If you have a really good eye, there is a caliper app for iphones/smartphones. It doesn't 'really' measure the thickness, it displays the caliper on the screen and you hold the object against it and adjust the caliper jaws as best as you can. If your eye is good, it is surprisingly accurate!
