$.40 cents bought me 4 x junk silver dimes from my bank teller today. very fun. this is the 3rd call from her since she made my acquaintance as a new lead teller at my bank. i have offered finders fees and even chocolates but she refuses not wishing to jeopardize her job. i will figure something out as a return gesture to her - maybe have to just bring a basket of goodies to share between all the tellers at Christmas or something. its cool and kind of fun to see that number pop up on my cell phone occasionally.![]()
I got some free constitutional today!!!
And yesterday I scored some stuff...

Well worn 1943 "S" nickle received as change. Most common silver coin I still find in change is the 1964 or earlier dimes, even mercury dimes, can't remember finding a silver nickel since I went through nickle rolls as a boy. Judging by wear, this one must have been in circulation since WWII, going through probably thousand of hands before being recognized as more than an nickel...

I didn't realize that nickels were ever made out of silver, aside from the odd silver proof set. I now see that 1942-1945 nickels were said to have been silver. I knew about steel pennies during the war years. I did not know about silver nickels. Thanks for making me take a look.

This is no longer posted in the Fed Minutes of January 2008, but still quoted here - https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna22592939. The FOMC minutes still quote MR. Reifschneider. as stating the same thing.
I think you will get some contesting feedback here with your statement about the US war nickel silver content. Where did you get this "research" information?
Everything I understand about the silver composition of those nickels was straight 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese.
Everything I've seen says the war nickels were all the some composition. Melt value for all production years is computed here: https://www.coinflation.com/coins/19...kel-Value.html
