1803 was the year. Made Jefferson a touch of a hypocrite, but he made the correct choice.

So far as why it was less than a dollar, that is easy. You kind of answered yourself when you talked about weight. Five francs have an asw of .7234. A silver dollar was over 3/4 of a troy ounce. Neat thing is, the 50 cent and under coins come to .7234 asw per dollar.

I should imagine the colonies weighed coinage because it was common practice to clip coinage.

Let me know what your research discovers though. I like this kinda stuff.

did the calculation, indeed 92 cents for a five francs / lira was quite right seen from the silverweight contents.

I've been itching for years. I haven't purchased ANYTHING in the last several years since my last job averaged a wage of just $12 hourly (spanning 5 years).
Last year finally got a job that pays what I am worth (twice that).... so this month used a bit of dry powder to pull the trigger on purchase of 60 ounces, mostly buffalo rounds.

Coming up in June there will be a coin show near where I live; might pick up 10 or 20 ounces there if premiums are good.

I was making $10 an hour for my first 350 troy ounces or so of shiny. It isn't how you get there, it's where you end up.

Just grabbed this for $36 shipped. If those chains are sterling like they claim... this is definitely well under melt.

I love it when silver drops. Proof set of same Canadian coins above $739.50 shipped. All sterling all ugly mintage of 79k on the proofs.

There are more photos, but you get the idea. Imagine the ones in the previous post, except in proof.
