View Full Version : How many pennies fit in a coffee can?

I've got a 39ounce coffee can (39 ounces of coffee, not copper) which I have filled to the brim with copper pennies. I don't have a scale to weight it on. Anyone got a ballpark figure (guess) on how many pennies are in the coffee can?

Do the math:

A bank box of pennies is about 3" x 3" x 8" or 72 cubic inches for $25 (2500) rolled pennies.

The volume of your coffee can is pi (3.14159) x R (radius - 1/2 diameter) squared x height.

I don't know what the factor is to account for the difference between "rolled" pennies and "random" pennies. :D

No need for a 'guess', it will be exactly 38,206 pennies.
(unless of course that is your coffee can is a completely different shape to mine which is highly likely, in which case it could be any number from 1 to 12,000,000)

Posted in container suggestion thread:

I use the plastic Folger's coffee containers... the 48oz size holds $50 face quite nicely and have a good grip for carrying if needed..... can actually get about $52-$53 face in them if you shake em down good while filling.... they stack nicely too..... I use the 11.3 oz size for nickels, they hold $45 face easily... plus, they work good when storing in a basement or other semi damp area....

I would ballpark your 39 oz. container @ $40-$41.50 or so......
