I have been long this stock as well as many others for awhile now and I can't really figure out newmont. It hardly rises when other gold stocks shoot up 4% or more on news of gold rising. It is the biggest miner in america if not the world, and puts up great earnings, yet this stock is the dog in my stocks. Anyone else long nem?

According to my calculations, NEM is going to $300. HUI is still trying to get over its weekly resistance. Once HUI closes above 540 for a couple weeks, the seniors are going to go!

NEM trades at a discount because they are depleting their reserves everyday. They will need to replace those reserves with an aquisition. This is priced into the share price. You would be better off to find a company with organic growth.

I have two other companies that are performing awesome, i guess I have been waiting around to see if nem would join them but It doesn't seem to be the case.

Newmont mining is the biggest position in my stocks and I am down 6%.
In general all my gold stocks are performing bad compared to the silver stocks.
I just wanted to have a large position in a senior gold mine to balance my portfolio, but I am also fed up with the bad performance. I think I will switch to junior or senior silver mining stocks and take the loss.

Judging by the previous comments, indicating share prices in the $50 to $70 per share range, the gold mining industry and this stock specifically have been in a bear market for 4 to 5 years.

From this article, the 21.7% increase indicates a start of Newmont's personal bull market.

That's a little surprising, but perhaps Newmont has gotten its costs under control and may be looking for acquisitions.

Series overview

Newmont Mining’s stated strategy is portfolio optimization. On one hand, it’s disposing of high-cost, non-core assets, and on the other hand, it’s acquiring low-cost assets with long mine lives in safer jurisdictions.

Newmont is outperforming the gold price and its peers. That suggests superior strategy and superior management execution.

It is adopting a value strategy. It is trying to produce gold at costs below the price of gold. What an idea!
Perhaps the other gold miners should adopt this strategy!

Newmont’s outperformance (http://marketrealist.com/2015/07/newmont-mining-outperformed-gold-sector-far-year/)

Newmont Mining (NEM) stock has risen 21.7% year-to-date. Meanwhile, the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has fallen by 5.5%, and the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), which tracks the spot price of gold, has fallen by 1%.

Newmont has also outperformed its peers in the sector. Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG), and Kinross Gold (KGC) have fallen by 1.2%, 13.1%, and 20.7%, respectively. This outperformance is mainly due to the strengthening of Newmont’s balance sheet as a result of non-core asset sales as well as unit cost reduction.

NEM is looking like a bargain below 20.
