The first of 33 trapped miners is expected to be lifted to the surface late Tuesday after miraculously surviving more than two months below ground, Chile's Mining Minister Laurence Golborne announced.

The minister announced the planned rescue at a news conference near the mine site, saying officials "hope to have at least one of our miners on the surface" before midnight.

Nearby, the miners' families have been holding vigil at a place called "Camp Hope."

I don't know why but I'm really emotionally involved in these guys getting back to the surface. I know I'll be celebrating along with their families.

It must be a scary ride for those men: 700 meters and I hear 1 meter
per second  that must be a claustrofobic experience... and than the
big moment: F R E E D O M !!! :)

Thumbs up for those guys!

I admit I didn't follow the story all that much. What were they mining? Gold I hope and I hope their pockets are full of it.
